Have your parents ever thought of putting you up for adoption, so you can have a better life? In the book Edgar Allan by John Neufeld, when the Ficketts adopted a black kid named Edgar Allan. The father, Mr.Fickett, who is a pastor thought it would be good to adopt him to give him a better life. What he does not know though is that his oldest daughter is not happy about it. She is upset because she fills them taking him people will talk about her and her family but her brother, Michael
thinks otherwise and thinks it could be a good thing for Edgar and his family
In Edgar Allan, the main character, Michael just found out his dad is adopting a little kid. He is so happy but when Mr.Fickett arrives, he is shocked. His father walked in with a black kid and says his name is Edgar Allan. When Michael was watching his new brother Edgar and his brother Stephen were playing his sister walks in and goes to see who Edgar Allan is. When the brother says to himself, “She stood there. Her mouth open. Her face reddened. And then she walked out. Just like that” (20). What Michael was tells us the read about his sister, he told us that she was shocked that he was black . Michaels sister Mary was shocked because her family is all white and around the time she was growing up, she has seen a lot of racism. She has seen what happens to kids in her neighborhood who are black. In addition to her being, shocked Mary tells her mother, “Mother, I am giving him the exact same chance he’s going to get with everyone else in this town. He is black ! It’s that easy” (25). Mary is telling her mother that he’s not getting same treatment as her other sibling because he is black. She tells her that she is going to treat him how she sees people treat black people. What she is not understanding is that her father took him in to change that. He wanted them to treat him like an equal to show him not everyone is the same. That there are people who are nice.
Yes, I would recommend this book. It is a really fast read. It has strong messages throughout the book. One good message I got out of this is treat others how you would like to be treated. John Neufeld did a good job while he was writing this book. I would say this book could be read in 5 grade 6 grade the earliest. John is also showing in his writing that people could change just like Mary did in the end of the book. Over all this was a good book and I would read it again.
